How is Giardia commonly contracted?

Giardia is a microscopic parasite that leads to an intestinal infection known as giardiasis. One of the most common ways individuals contract this parasite is through the ingestion of contaminated water, which can include water from pools where fecal contamination has occurred. Contaminated pool water is a significant risk factor as Giardia can survive in chlorinated water for long periods, making it possible for swimmers to become infected.

Raw poultry, undercooked pork, and contaminated cooking utensils are not typical transmission routes for Giardia. While proper food handling and cooking are essential in preventing various foodborne illnesses, Giardia specifically spreads through water sources that have been contaminated with fecal matter, commonly from infected humans or animals. Hence, engaging in swimming activities in contaminated water bodies is a primary way the infection is spread.
